Salt efflorescence

Salt efflorescence appears as a white ‘fluffy’ deposit on the surface of masonry. The deposit can be readily brushed off the surface.

It is normally caused by wetting and drying cycles bringing soluble salts to the surface, usually on masonry.

To reduce the risk of it occurring protect the surface from wetting and drying cycles and/or use masonry units with a lower content of dissolved salts.
