Protection to reinforcement
One of the important roles of the concrete is to protect the embedded steel reinforcement or prestressing tendons. This is generally achieved by providing an adequate thickness of concrete (cover) to the steel of the appropriate quality (strength and proportions). The protection can be enhanced by the use of protective coatings, particularly in extremely aggressive environments.
