Tooling is more aggressive than grit blasting (see separate entry Grit blasted surface finish) and produces a rougher texture. It can be undertaken using a variety of pneumatic or electric hand-held equipment, ranging from needle guns to bush hammers and chisel-point tools. The pressure used and the duration of the treatment will influence the depth of exposure achieved.
It should be noted that Health & Safety concerns, and in particular vibration-induced physical problems such as ‘White Finger’, are tending to discourage the use of these types of hand-held tool. Thus, where possible, tooling should be carried out using appropriate machinery rather than hand-held tools.
