Mortar provides an important function in the construction of a robust, structural load bearing and durable concrete masonry wall system. It bonds the units together as well as accommodating tolerances in the masonry units in order to maintain the necessary coursing heights. The selection of the mortar mix depends on the block type being used and application. For most general uses a designation mix (iii) (1:1:6 cement:lime:sand or equivalent, i.e. general purpose mortar) is normally specified. Stronger mixes may be required for structural or durability purposes, which may preclude some low strength block types. A weaker mix will increase the ability to accommodate greater movement.
