Free standing retaining walls
Precast concrete retaining wall units are used in a range of applications, both permanent and temporary, for retaining soil and other bulk materials. Each unit is in the form of an L or an inverted T. The units are available in standard widths and a range of heights, depending on the manufacturer (say 1 m wide and to 1 m to 3.75 m high).
The units are generally designed to be free-standing, sitting on a prepared base, though additional stability can be obtained by bolting the units down and adjacent units may be connected for added security. Systems are available in which retaining wall units are prestressed together to form storage tanks for liquids.
