From April 2001 it has been possible for construction products to be placed on the UK and European market with CE Marking, based on a harmonised European Standard. This provides for common methods of performance evaluation of products across Europe. The methods are described in the relevant European Standards (ENs) that are being progressively published.
Products that are covered by the Construction Products Directive (CPD) are those that are “produced for incorporation in a permanent manner in works”. In this case “works” include buildings, roads, bridges and civil engineering and building works. Requirements include mechanical resistance, safety in the case of fire and protection against noise.
It is important to note that, in general, CE Marking is not a quality mark and that factors such as durability may not be considered.
