Design Principles
Concrete structures are designed to Limit State principles, with the intention that they should behave adequately in use (the Serviceability Limit State) and also have sufficient strength under load (the Ultimate limit State). Safety factors are applied to both the loads and material properties to give the required levels of safety. The design process and the use of the correct materials should ensure adequate durability.
