European standards for design

Common European Standards are being prepared to cover all aspects of design.

The basis of design (for all materials) is considered in BS EN 1990, Eurocode - Basis of structural design, and its associated UK National Annex.

The design of concrete structures is dealt with in Eurocode 2 (BS EN 1992), Design of concrete structures. The various parts are given below and each is accompanied by a National Annex which should be read  in conjunction with the Eurocode.

BS EN 1992-1-1: General rules and rules for buildings
BS EN 1992-1-2: General rules. Structural fire design
BS EN 1992-2: Concrete bridges. design and detailing rules
BS EN 1992-3: Liquid retaining and containing structures

On 30 November 2023, 2nd generation Eurocodes were published. Importantly, both ´bridges´ and ´liquid retaining and containment structures´ are now covered by BS EN 1992-1-1:2023 Design of concrete structures. General rules and rules for buildings bridges and civil engineering structures and ‘fire’ in BS EN 1992-1-2:2023 “Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures. General rules – Structural Fire design”.

In the UK, these 2nd generation codes should not be used until the National Annexes have been published, expected 2024. They will co-exist with the previous editions until withdrawn in 2028. The current BS EN 1992-2 and BS EN 1992-3 will not be replaced.
