The structural components (columns, beams, slabs, walls, cladding) in industrial and commercial buildings, car parks and other applications may be cast in situ or are obtainable as precast units from a number of manufacturers.
Various types of precast concrete floor slabs are available, that may be used with concrete or steel supporting beams. Cross-sections range from solid slabs through hollow core floor planks to double tees. Choice of the appropriate type of unit will depend on the loading and the span.
Generally a limited amount of in situ concrete is used to form the connections between the units comprising the building. An alternative approach is ‘hybrid’ construction, in which certain precast units and combined with more extensive in situ concrete work (for example precast columns with in situ floors).
