Concrete is not just for large structures built by specialist contractors. It is one of the least expensive, easy to use and, probably, the most versatile material the DIY-minded householder or gardener could wish for. The materials are readily available and economically priced. The tools required are largely those that will already be to hand in most households or that can be bought, hired or made up on the spot without great expense or difficulty. The techniques involved are straightforward and the ‘rules’ are largely those of common sense. The expertise required, even for a large project, comes quickly with practice. Concrete can be placed in position in two basic forms, either as pre-cast units or moulded in-situ.
