Concrete paving flags

Concrete flag paving is available in a variety of colours and textures, enabling it to be used to delineate different functions. The standard sizes of flags range from 300 x 300 mm to 600 x 900 mm. Various surface textures are available, some designed to match traditional stone paving.

Other types of flags are produced with raised strips or blisters, to give warning of hazards to the blind and partially sighted; the most common is blister paving installed at pedestrian crossings. Paving flags may be laid on mortar or on sand, over a suitable road-base or sub-base of a thickness to suit the underlying ground conditions and anticipated loading.

The paved area must be adequately restrained at the edges to prevent movement, by means of small precast units or kerbs. The restraint must be adequately robust to withstand damage if over-run by vehicles is anticipated.

Macro synthetic fibres are now being used in a range of paving slabs, particularly for use in pedestrian areas where they are likely to be overloaded and crack. The fibres will avoid the risk of the cracked parts moving and creating trip hazards major concern for Local Authorities.
