Concrete columns

Columns are the main vertical load-bearing elements of many buildings. They are designed primarily to carry an axial load, usually in conjunction with a limited amount of bending. They may be cast in situ or be precast. In most cases the cross-sections are square or rectangular (to maintain the same geometry as the beams) although circular and other cross-sectional shapes are used.
