Prestressing design

The basic design principle is that the prestressing force is provided to counteract the tensile forces induced in the concrete member by externally applied loads. The strands or wires are generally located within the member but may be located outside it. The prestressing may be applied before the concrete hardens (pre-tensioning) or after it has gained sufficient strength (post-tensioning).
